Aluminium and its application in anti-COVID

It has been quite a long time since Covid-19 appeared, researchers have wondered whether aluminium has any benefit in the fight against Corona virus, as well as how the aluminium industry will change to match the new reality. Fortunately, thanks to its many positive properties, aluminium is expected to play a strong role in ensuring hygiene and effectively helping to limit the spread of viruses.

One advantage that makes aluminium a popular choice in the medical device industry is its natural resistance to corrosion. This is an important characteristic for any application where hygiene is a priority. In fact, even if aluminium is scratched or dented, the protective layer will re-form on its own, plus surface treatments can be added to enhance corrosion resistance.

With its smooth & easy-to-clean surface, aluminium has been recognized for its hygienic properties, becoming an integral part of both the healthcare and food & beverage industries. Blisters and ampoules are usually made of a thin layer of aluminium to form a barrier that protects the medicine inside from heat, moisture, bacteria, and odors.

Typical aluminium products such as medical instruments, trays or containers are commonly found in medical offices, clinics and hospitals. The ability to be able to quickly clean all such surfaces in a medical setting is especially important in times of epidemic like today.

Some other medical device applications that can be made from aluminium include: ventilators, stretchers, wheelchairs, stethoscopes, heart monitors and imaging devices...

Besides, thanks to its high thermal conductivity, aluminium is also chosen for the plastic processing industry, especially for the production of medical devices and PPE.
